brows: henna, lamination &

total eye makeover with brows

What Are Henna Brows?

As a licensed cosmetologist (hair stylist), I use Elleebana Brow Henna,  a natural alternative to tinting that is filled with anti-oxidants, a vitamin complex and hydrolysed proteins. This helps to strengthen and restore brow hair growth and improves the condition of the hair. Not only does the henna tint the brow hairs with a color that lasts 6 weeks - much longer than regular brow tint -  but it also serves as a kind of temporary tattoo, in that it stains the skin, lasting anywhere from 2 to 14 days.

**This cannot be used to tint eyelashes. This is a brow only product.

First, I will  prepare your skin and design the best shape for your natural brows and then will apply the henna. Henna takes longer to process than regular tinting - but it lasts longer. Like a "temporary tattoo," it dyes the skin safely, but due to variations in client skin type, exposure to UV rays, cleansing, and other factors, the skin tint lasts for 2 to 14 days. If you want a more permanent solution, refer to the Brow Tattoo page.

Henna has a drying effect on your skin, so if you already have very dry skin, it is not recommended. Also, it is not compatible with an existing tattoo, because it is a natural exfoliant. You can always experiment with a henna brow tattoo, wait a couple of months, and then get a real brow tattoo.

Please note that this product line does not include true black, because true black henna contains ingredients that are dangerous in pregnancy. I'll use a combination of henna colors to achieve the darkest effect that is safely possible on your skin.

What Is Brow Lamination / Brow Lift?

With my cosmetology license, I use Elleebana products  to re-form how the eyebrow hairs are arrayed. First I use a water soluble adhesive to glue the brow hairs in the desired shape and also to create a protective layer between the skin and the brow hairs. Next, just as with a lash lift, a high pH product is applied to the brow hairs, which opens the outer layer of each hair (called the cuticle). After processing, I remove that product.

The open cuticle allows me to reshape the protein bonds within the main part of the hair, the cortex. I do this reshaping by making sure that the brow hairs remain in that original glued configuration through the application of a fixative product. After I remove that, I begin shaping and removing hair through waxing, plucking, and trimming.

What Is A Total Eye Makeover with Brows?

A Total Eye Makeover involves both an eyebrow service and a Lash Lift & Tint.  Click here to learn about the the Lash Lift & Tint procedure.

Typically, I do the Lash Lift & Tint first because I may need to apply tape over your brow area. Once I've completed that, you have your choice of brow services, at different price points:

  • Regular Tint with Shaping (waxing & plucking).

    • I use Belmacil tints and can customize a variety of colors

  • Henna Tint with Shaping

    • Henna temporarily stains the skin, and the brow tint lasts longer

  • Brow Lamination with or without any tinting

  • Brow Lamination with regular tint or with Henna

Brow Service Q & A

Q.   Which form of brow tinting is safer, regular tint or henna?

Both Belmacil and my Henna tints come from the well-established industry leader, Elleebana. The Belmacil tint is similar to hair dye because a developer is involved to activate the tint. This developer is very gentle and safe. The tint generally does not also dye the skin. It fades naturally over a period of about a month or more, depending on your aftercare.

Henna is a natural alternative to tinting.  It's filled with anti-oxidants, a vitamin complex and hydrolysed proteins. This helps to strengthen and restore brow hair growth and improves the condition of the hair. Not only does the henna tint the brow hairs with a color that lasts 6 weeks - longer than regular brow tint -  but it also serves as a kind of temporary tattoo, in that it stains the skin, lasting anywhere from 2 to 14 days. How long its effect lasts depends on your aftercare. This is also a safe procedure, particularly since the more questionable ingredients found in pure black henna do not exist in the Elleebana line.

Q.   Who is a candidate for these brow services?

  • Men, women, and nonbinary individuals who have a relatively full natural brow; there needs to be something to tint and to shape

  • Anyone wanting different color brows. With the Belmacil tints, I can lighten or darken your brows or change their color to match a new hair color.

  • People with full brows who want them shaped professionally.  Please note that I do not provide brow shaping by itself, only as part of a combo service such as those listed above.

  • Anyone not wanting to apply brow makeup for a month or so.

Q.   Who isn't a candidate for these brow services?

  • Anyone with skin conditions around the brow area and forehead, including:

    • psoriasis

    • eczema

    • oily or very dry skin

    • red, itchy, bumpy, scaly skin

    • skin with large pores or deep wrinkles

  • Anyone having used Accutane in the last 6 months
  • Anyone having used retinoid products within the last month
  • Anyone who has had and been treated for cancer within the last two months
  • Anyone having had their brows microbladed or otherwise tattooed should stick with the Belmacil tint and avoid henna for 6 months
  • Anyone who has had an adverse reaction to eyebrow henna, eyelash lift products (used in the lamination process), or eyebrow tinits

Please note: any client who has any of the above conditions and makes an appointment without consulting with me ahead of time will be charged the full service amount, even if I am unable to safely and carefully carry out the service.

 Q.   How do I take care of my lashes & brows after these services?

You should read and print out the the aftercare instructions (see Policies & Forms) at least a week ahead of time; bring both your intake and your aftercare forms with you, and we will go over them during your appointment. You'll be given a printed copy to take home. It's critical that you follow the instructions provided at your appointment, because failure to do so can lead to premature fading.

Q.   How will my brows look & feel immediately after the appointment? Can I resume normal activities right after?

Your brows will be at their darkest immediately after your service. They will fade naturally over time. You must avoid the following activities for 24-48 hours:

  • sun exposure (the longer you protect your brows, the longer the tint will last)

  • exercise

  • heat

  • steam (including cooking over a stove)

  • saunas

  • swimming

  • showers

  • getting your face wet

  • oils, creams, and moisturizers

Q.   When should I schedule my next session?

You may want to refresh your look after four weeks or so, but your hairs have not gone through their entire growth cycle. For this reason, I prefer that you rebook 8 weeks out. Your brow and/or lash hairs will be at the right stage for repeating this process.

Q.   Are there things I need to do or to not do before and after my appointment?

Yes, to safeguard against problems with the procedure, infection, or premature fading, there are important things you need to do both before and after your treatment. These are indicated below, in the Before Your Service and Important Booking Info sections, and also in the aftercare instructions and intake form (see Policies and Forms).

Q.   Is the work guaranteed?

In Oregon, only a licensed cosmetologist (hair stylist) can perform these services (lash lift & tint, henna, brow lamination). Being an esthetician is not enough in Oregon. While I can guarantee that I am properly licensed and certified and that I use sterile equipment and appropriate, safe products, the work itself is not guaranteed. This is because all my work is an art, not a science, and because there are so many variations in client skin, history, and aftercare. Please note that I do hold an A+ accreditation with the Better Business Bureau, a recognition reserved only for invitees who respond to a thorough interview process. Learn more about my credentials by visiting the About Martha page.

Before Your Service

Read through this information as well as the aftercare instructions carefully so that you know when to schedule your treatment before or after various activities (parties and other events, vacations, anti-aging treatments, etc.). Failure to observe these requirements can make the appointment difficult or interfere with setting.

In general, for these services, you will need to avoid getting your face wet; use of makeup, oils, creams, lotions, makeup remover, etc. for 24 hours prior and 24-48 hours after the service. You must avoid saunas and steam (including cooking over a steaming stove) for 24-48 hours, so shower and wash your hair before your appointment. You also will be instructed in aftercare. For these reasons, book your appointment accordingly, not immediately prior to a summer vacation, exotic getaway, or special event. Allow a couple of days before and after.

24 Hours Prior:

  • For eyebrow and eyelash procedures, please do not wear any makeup above your cheekbones at the time of your appointments

  • Do not use any creams, lotions, oils, or moisturizers for 24 hours prior

****Do not discontinue any medications without the approval of your physician****

Less than 1 Week Prior:

  • No botox, fillers, or other injectables near the service area

Less than 1 Month Prior:

  • No chemical peels

  • No Retin-A

  • No dermaplaning or microneedling

  • No laser hair removal near the service area

Less than 2-3 Months Prior:

  • For Lash Lift & Tint, no eye or eyelid surgery, including cataract, Lasik, and blepharoplasty procedures

  • No chemotherapy or radiation treatment

At least 6 months before:

  • No Accutane

For Your Appointment, You Will Need:

  • Your ID showing you are at least 18 years of age (required by law)

  • Intake form and aftercare instructions (see Policies & Forms on menu bar)

  • Please be prepared and on time!

    • Clients who are more than 15 minutes late or who have not satisfied the requirements on the Intake Form will need to reschedule and will need to pay all fees for both scheduled appointments

Please note that, by law,  no one may accompany you into the treatment room.

      • make sure you have no makeup on

      • the best time to take these photos is in the morning

        • first, wash your face, but apply no product whatsoever

        • wait about an hour before taking the photos

        • also, perform this skin-type test to determine if you have oily, dry, normal, or combination skin; include that info on the medical intake form where indicated.

      • Send these to me in a text message via WhatsApp, Viber, or SMS to 503-706-8641 or email them to me at Martha@Q7.com, but please send me a text to let me know you've done so, since I don't check my email every day.

    • All client interactions are done via text, including preappointment communications and treatment follow-up

    • Clients are asked to confirm their appointment by clicking on a link provided in a text message 48 hours in advance. This text comes from a "short code" number, such as 89985.

      • Clients not confirming within 48 hours may have their appointment cancelled  and will forfeit the nonrefundable deposit.

  • A credit card is required to book

  • A nonrefundable deposit will be charged against your card upon acceptance of your appointment request; you will be charged the balance at your appointment. The deposit amount ranges from $25 to $150, depending on the service selected

  • Be prepared!

    • In order to conduct the treatment in a safe and effective manner, it's critical that you are adequately prepared for your appointment.

      • Please print, read, and fill out the intake form and aftercare instructions (see Policies & Forms)

      • Clients who are not adequately prepared or who have not followed the instructions found in the Before Your Service forfeit their deposit and may have their appointment cancelled and may be charged the full amount of the service

  • ARRIVE ON TIME!

    • Your appointment may be cancelled and you may be charged the full amount for the service if you are more than 15 minutes late. Please text me at 503-706-8641 if you are running late.

    • PARKING:

      • Allow at least half an hour to find parking for longer services, especially if you have an SUV - or take transit or Lyft or similar service

        • Unfortunately, parking in the Pearl District is becoming more and more difficult to find, particularly because, due to all of the ongoing construction, construction workers' vehicles are taking up more and more spaces

        • Thus, I strongly recommend using Lyft or a similar service if at all possible.

        • Two streetcar lines (the A & NS northbound) run directly in front of Sola, stopping at 10th & Glisan, across the street; the B & NS southbound stop just one block away, on 11th & Glisan)

      • There is on-street 2-hour metered parking for shorter services like consultations and lash lift & tint

      • Longer term parking is unavailable at metered street locations, and you will not be able to leave during the service to feed the meter; you are best off parking in a lot or structure

        • Clients with SUVs may have difficulty parking in a surface lot, so look for a structure instead

        • To find parking near La Bellissima, please check here

  • Please read through my Policies section for other details

Please note: I offer complimentary text consults for brief questions and info, and I offer free 20-minute Zoom consults. However, there are situations in which either you,the client, or I, the artist, will want to have an in-person consultation. Please read below to see if this applies to you.

After reading through all the information throughout this website, you might still want a 1-on-1 consult for any of the following:

  • to clear up any questions or concerns

  • to help choose between service offerings (for example, henna versus regular tint)

When it comes to determining your brow shape or color, that's all part of the initial service and is included in the service price.  And you can always feel free to contact me via text to see if a consultation is really worth it or necessary in your case, at 503-706-8641.
